Prosperity Toss Salad 魚生

The Prosperity Salad or 魚生 (pronounced Yee Sang in Cantonese) is traditionally tossed and eaten during the 7th day of Lunar New Year celebrations. It is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor. 

It is a raw fish salad topped with shredded vegetables and pickled *ingredients such as fried wonton strips, pomelo, carrot, daikon, red cabbage, cucumber, red peppers and usually smoked salmon. Laced with a plum sauce and five spice dressing plus a sprinkling of crushed peanuts. *ingredients vary but are usually cut into thin strips

During the salad tossing at the table, auspicious wishes and hopes for the new year are shouted out. The Chinese also believe “the higher you toss, the more luck you get.”
